Winter Olympics 2010

The XXI Winter Olympics take place in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in February, 2010. Skiing events include alpine skiing (downhill, slalom, giant slalom, super G, and combined), freestyle skiing, cross country skiing, and nordic combined, which involves ski jumping and cross country skiing.

With a year to go the U.S. Ski Team has asked several of this year's team members and contenders for the Olympic team for their thoughts as the Games get closer.

The men's and women's Olympic Alpine ski races - Downhill, Super G, Giant Slalom, Slalom, and Super Combined - will take place at Whistler Blackcomb Resort, specifically on Whistler Mountain, about 70 miles from Vancouver.

Kathrin Hoelzl of Germany won the Aspen Winternational Giant Slalom race and Sarka Zahrobska of the Czech Republic easily took the gold in the Slalom race for the second year in a row.

I think the best way to analyze the 2010 Winter Olympic ski races is to take a close look at the 2009 World Cup race season. Most of the ski racers competing in Vancouver will be the veterans who have raced on their country's World Cup A Team.

When it comes to previewing the 2010 Women's Downhill, all the USA medals were won by Lindsey Vonn. Also, the only other U.S. woman to score in the top ten was Julia Mancusco, but the Swiss Team put seven different ladies in the top ten total, Dominique Gisen five times.

Didier Cuche of Switzerland won the Lake Louise Audi FIS Ski World Cup Dowhill while Canadian Manuel Osborne-Paradis gave the hometown crowd a lot to cheer for as he raced to a gold medal win in the Super G.

Reinfried Herbst, Austrian slalom specialist who finished 5th in the 2009 World Cup event standings, finished .28 seconds ahead of Croatian Ivica Kostelic to win Audi FIS Alpine World Cup Men's Slalom at Levi, Finland. Reigning World Cup slalom champion, Jean-Baptiste Grange of France rounded out the podium in third place.

Maria Riesch of Germany, the reigning World Cup slalom champion, beat her friend Lindsey Vonn of the U.S. by .08 seconds in the Levi, Finland Audi FIS Alpine World Cup Women’s Slalom. Riesch led after the first run by .22 and although Vonn charged back with the fastest second run it wasn’t enough to pass Riesch in total time.

The 2010 Audi Alpine FIS Ski World Cup Women's and Men's Slalom races on November 15-16, 2009 are the first technical races of the 2010 season. This marks the second stop on the alpine racing Road To the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

The October 24 - 25, 2009 Men's and Women's Giant Slalom races high above Sölden, Austria on the Rettenbach Glacier mark the start of the 2010 Audi Alpine FIS Ski World Cup racing season and the start on the alpine racing Road To the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

Tanja Poutiainen of Finland, the 09 GS event champion, and Kathrin Zettel of Austria, last year's Sölden winner and GS event runnerup, battled for podium slots at the Solden, Austria, World Cup Giant Slalom. This year Tanja takes the gold but only by 1 one-hundredth of a second over Kathrin.
