Switzerland Women's Alpine Ski Racing Team

By

During the 2013 FIS World Cup ski racing season, Lara Gut skied her way to the top of a World Cup Downhill podium and also added a bronze medal. The rest of Switzerland Women's Alpine Ski Racing Team nabbed one silver and several bronze medals but not enough points to get anyone besides Gut (9th) into the Overall WC top ten.

Even at the 2013 FIS World Ski Championship in Schladming, Austria, the team could only manage to put Lara Gut on the super G podium for a silver medal. In fact, since 2009, looking at the World Cup circuit, two FIS World Ski Championships and the 2010 Vancouver Olympics the Swiss women took the top spot on only four alpine racing podiums.

Both Gut and Dominique Gisin are seasoned vets and Sochi could be a swan song - at least for Gisin and you can bet they'll have a large rooting section and any medals will mean a hero's homecoming.

It seems the Swiss have never managed to put up an enduring female champion, which is surprising if you know how demanding the Swiss fans are. However, the Swiss women's team will show up at Sochi with seasoned vets and hardy youngsters and just maybe the cowbells can push Lara Gut up to that top spot - maybe.
