AltaSnowbird Named Top Skiing Destination
Outside Magazine has named AltaSnowbird the top skiing destination in North America. “We’re flattered to be named the top resort in North America by Outside,” said Snowbird President Bob Bonar. "All of us here are proud to be Alta skiers on this 70th Anniversary, and that skiing pride only grows when we combine with Snowbird,” remarked Alta General Manager Onno Wieringa. Located 40 minutes from Salt Lake City International Airport, Snowbird and Alta are two of the most accessible resorts in North America.
Founder of Deer Valley Resort dies at 86
Edgar B. Stern Jr., founder of Deer Valley Resort, died Sunday, October 12 in Seattle, WA at 86. A new standard for the ski industry was set at Deer Valley when Edgar Stern achieved his dream of combining the sport of skiing with the service, food and amenities of a five star hotel. Deer Valley Resort is frequently honored by the readers of SKI magazine with the rating of #1 Ski Resort in North America.
Gore Mt - Ski Bowl Interconnect Approved
The Adirondack Park Agency (APA) approved a significant economic and recreational expansion for the Olympic Regional Development (ORDA) run Gore Mountain Ski Center. The interconnect plan calls for eight additional trails and two new ski lifts on the east slope of Gore Mountain over a five-year construction period. A quad chair would connect the Ski Bowl trails with Gore Mountain, while two additional quad chairlifts at the Ski Bowl would accompany additions and upgrades to the Ski Bowl trails themselves.
Second Freeride World Tour Stops in Squaw Valley USA
Four locations around the world have been selected for the second edition of the Freeride World Tour. Starting in Sochi with the Nissan Russian Adventure 2009 top freeride skiers then travel to Squaw Valley USA, France and Switzerland to prove their skills on some of the world's most challenging faces. The Freeride World Tour has a prize purse of $250,000, the highest sum ever to be paid in ski or snowboard freeride contests.
Fallen Hero Leaves Gift to Race Team
Dodge Ridge Wintersports Area, CA - U.S. Army Sgt. Bobby Rapp, a former member of the Dodge Ridge Race Team from ages 8-13, was killed by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan on March 8. His mother, Jennifer Rapp, announced that her son’s will had made specific provisions to support the Dodge Ridge Race Team. It was Bobby’s wish that the gift be intended to help the growth of the race team. As a living memorial a scholarship fund will be established.
Heavenly 2008-09 Improvements
Three new trails, on-mountain lodge renovations, radio frequency ticket technology and a major trail re-grade headline resort improvements Heavenly Mountain Resort announced today for the 2008-09 season. Under Heavenly’s 10-year master plan approved in April 2007, guests can look forward to new lifts, new on-mountain restaurants, new lodging and base villages that will greatly improve the overall experience.
Loon Mountain Opens Two New Trails for 2008-09
Loon Mountain, NH will open two new trails on South Peak, adding 14 acres of terrain. Other improvements include 20 additional high-efficiency fan guns and 50 new HKD tower snow guns; a new carpet lift; new rental equipment; 4,800-square-foot addition for the White Mountain Adaptive Snowsports School, and 10 new rails to complement the 65 existing rails, jibs and jumps.
Powder Mountain Doubles Snowcat Terrain in 2008-09
Powder Mountain, UT has increased the snowcat skiing terrain 100% to 2,000+ acres! Also in 08-09 A new Mountain Adventure Center located near the expanded Timberline Lodge will house all of Powder Mountain’s adventure programs including Snowcat Powder Safaris, Mountain Adventure Tours and the Snow Sports School.
Mountain High Investments Raise Guest Experience
At Mountain High, CA, 2008-09 will bring a completely remodeled Big Pines Lodge, increased snowmaking capacity by up to 40%, new tubing lanes, two park-specific snowcats, and increased Sports School offerings.
Whiteface
Located to the northeast of The Slides, Lookout Mountain will open in December 2008. The mountain's goal is to offer an expert trail, an intermediate run, a new triple chair starting just below the first pitch on Easy Street, some glade skiing, and snowmaking. The vertical for Lookout Mountain alone is 2,200 vertical feet.
Wachusett Mountain adds to Services and Programs
This season Wachusett Mountain Resort's has purchased 2 new Piston Bully Snowcat Groomers, is offering its first-ever College Season Pass and has expanded the “Learn to Turn” Beginner’s program. Check out the stunning new “Cathedral Room” at the Wachusett Village Inn at the new web site.

The ski resort survey is the most comprehensive and longest-running in the winter sports industry and in the past eight years, Deer Valley’s rating hasn’t dipped lower than third.
