Backcountry skiing, sometimes called "off-piste skiing," is skiing in areas off and away from the groomed runs of ski resorts. Backcountry terrain isn't marked, mapped, or groomed, and it is free from the chair lifts of ski resorts. Basically, backcountry skiing offers skiers a chance to brave more challenging terrain in a more natural setting, and sometimes even make the first tracks in fresh powder. Here are images from a day of backcountry skiing in Killington, Vermont.
