You can't beat the views and the scenery on a day trip over Guardsman Pass road out of Park City and up into the mountains of the Wasatch Mountain State Park. The road is "maintained gravel" surface for most of the way but still good for the family car. However, Guardsman Pass is closed during the late fall and winter so mark it on your list of things to do when you visit Park City in summer.

After spending some time skiing Mammoth Mountain in early May these photos I took there are sure to make you want to come back in high season.

Getting to Mammoth Mountain for some early May spring skiing I flew into Reno, rented a car and headed south to Mammoth. All but about 15 miles out of 170 was a straght shot down US 395. I grew up driving to ski resorts in the East and so a 3 hour trip was not a big deal but I can say that this road trip was probably the most scenic 'going to a ski resort' ride I ever made.

Megeve is a wonderfully quaint village in the French Alps, with first class restaurants, high-end shops, casinos, and narrow cobbled streets. Horse drawn sleighs carry tourists around town and a ski bus provides service to the slopes.

In France's Les Trois Vallees, Meribel - the "Heart of the 3 Valleys" - or as the French say - "Coeur des Trois Vallees" is the most accessible to all of the 3 valleys. Here is a tour of the Meribel Les Allues valley.

Park City Mountain Resort Host Carol Stephenson gave a great mountain ski around tour. She pointed out all the old mining structures half hidden in snow and trees and the the new Crescent Express, high speed quad which took us very quickly into the more advanced recesses of the resort.

Park City Mountain Resort in Summer offers thrills both zipping along high in the air and shooting down on tracks through the trees. Leisurely chairlift rides bring you up for mountain biking and trail hiking while down at the base area the kids can spend the day on the climbing wall, bouncing on the Legacy Launcher bungee, and on rides in the Little Miner's Park.

Whether you ski or not a ride on the Whistler Blackcomb Peak to Peak Tram is a must do if you are ever in the area. It is such an experience it is worth a destination trip by itself.

Ragged Mountain, New Hampshire.

The Portes du Soleil is one of the largest linked ski areas in the world. Skiing the Portes du Soleil provides the experience of are skiing through one ski resort after another and accessing seemingly countless lifts on the same lift ticket, a lift tickets that grants access to one of the best ski areas in the world.

The Resort at Squaw Creek, sits at the south corner of Squaw Valley USA with the Squaw Creek chairlift right outside the door, you can't get much closer than that to all the great skiing Squaw Valley has to offer.

Jonny Moseley, 1998 Olympic Gold Medalist, recently spent several days leading tours around Squaw Valley USA for his many fans and admirers.

Alpine Meadows Mountain Resort in Olympic Valley, California offers all the steep and deep you can handle, and is also a great family friendly resort with the base area being like a clan picnic with everyone welcome.

It's always fun skiing Stowe with steeps, trees, twisting New England cruisers there's something for everyone.

The expanse of the skiing at Megeve seems to just go on and on. You could pick up your lift ticket, strap on a backpack of clothes, ski, and hopscotch poma lifts, chairs, trams, and gondolas from one town to another. It would probably be several days before you covered anywhere near all the 200 plus miles of skiing around Megeve.

On an early season trip to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort the snow hadn't yet piled up enough to allow safe skiing for the Jackson Hole tram to run. However, I did get a lot of good skiing in - more than enough to want to return in high season.

With steeps and chutes, fresh corduroy and powder, Sugar Bowl offers choices for everybody. Tunnel 41 trail off the Mt. Judah Express lift is where the 2010 U.S. Ski Cross members Casey Puckett and Sugar Bowl's Daron Rahlves did a pre-Vancouver Olympic Ski Cross Training Camp. Daron Rahlves calls Sugar Bowl homecourt which to me means don't miss skiing it to see why.

On a pre-Olympic trip to Whistler Blackcomb Resort I was able to ski and take some interesting photos on the Olympic venues.

Skiers race in Snowbasin, Utah's 2008 Firecracker. This event drew over 100 entries for the modified GS fun filled race and daylong celebrations - skiing and racing on the "greatest Snow on Earth" in the greatest country on earth - on the 4th of July.

Teton Village is a compact arrangement of hotels, eateries, ski shops and apre ski, all centered around the celebrated Jackson Hole tram. Stroll through the village anytime, day or night, and you will be cheerfully greeted by passersby. Without a doubt Jackson Hole is one of the most friendly ski resorts you'll find.

The Canyons Resort, the largest winter resort in Utah turns into a deep green playground in summer. Everything is here, from a summer concert in the Resort Village to a scenic gondola ride up to the Red Pine Lodge for fine gourmet luncheons, horseback riding, hiking and mountain biking.

At Breckenridge, it was a given that I was going to be skiing some of the best terrain in North America. Breck - as it is affectionately called - stretches over four mountains (soon to be five we hope) Peaks 10, 9, 8, and 7, is consistently near the top on all the skier surveys. These photos show why it's at the top of the list.

The town of Breckenridge is a warm friendly place to visit, with lots to do, plenty of shopping and great food - ranging from a quick snack to fine dining. Over the life of Breckenridge a unique culture has evolved and become the fabric that makes a vacationer or a visiting skier feel more of a friend than a tourist. 

The focal point of the new Snowmass base village development is the two-story, 25,000-square-foot Treehouse Kids' Adventure Center.

The third day in Val d'Isere I intended to test the expanse of the l'Espace Killy. Of course I needed a guide for this.

Walking in the village of Val d'Isere makes for enjoyable strolling day or evening.

Vancouver is obviously very excited about it's role as the host city for the 2010 Winter Games and the Omega Countdown Clock is in prominent display. The Freestyle events will be held at Cypress Mountain, a short ride from downtown Vancouver. I spent a day skiing Cypress Mountain and construction and snow shaping were well on the way to bringing all the freestyle venues up to Olympic standards.

Stowe, Vermont is an iconic and charming New England village, with shopping, restauarants, and just about everything you need for a Vermont winter vacation.

On a recent pre-Olympic trip to Whistler Blackcomb Resort I was at the Gondola early one morning just in time to see a class of young dogs and their handlers gathering around and still keeping a little curious puppy distance.

Three days skiing at Whitefish Mountain Resort brought out the best of Mother Nature and woke up Ol' Man Winter enough to dump a good foot of powder. Here are some photos from all around the mountain and some neat off the snow places.

A short ride from Whitefish Mountain Resort the town has a vibrant downtown centered on Central Avenue, several blocks of souvenir shops, boutique clothing, restaurants and bars. On a sunny day you get the classic view of the Big Mountain looming above.
