Anyone Can Be An Expert Skier 2

By Mike Doyle, About.com

Harald Harb's Anyone Can Be An Expert Skier 2 - Powder, Bumps and Carving (Buy Direct) is an excellent book for intermediate level skiers who are seriously interested in attaining the next level. As the number "2" indicates, this book is a follow up, which continues advancing skiers using Harb's Primary Movements Teaching System (PMTS). The book comes with a DVD that shows each chapter topic in real life motion, and tear out "Pocket Instructor" cards to use as on the slope reminders of the exercises and movements.

Let me note that Harald Harb's teaching method is not appreciated by some other schools of ski instruction. That doesn't mean Harb's method is not effective. In fact, any skier who has reached a level where he or she can understand the basic physics of skiing can use the advice presented in the book.

You will quickly find that Harb is a dedicated teacher of skiing. He is passionate in his desire to be sure the reader completely understands what he is saying - sometimes to the point of overkill. However, I get the impression he actually wishes he were there to help you in person as you take his technique to the snow.

The book uses sets of freeze frame photos to go with each exercise and technique which can sometimes be confusing as to the direction of turning across the fall line, but if you concentrate it all comes together. If you follow Harb's PMTS as he writes it, watch the video, and use the tear out cards you will improve your skiing.

Harald Harb teaches that the closer together your skis are the better skier you will be but, again, other experts don't necessarily agree. The core of his system, the Phantom Move, however, works well with boots together or comfortably apart.

Harb is right, when you learn Release, Transfer and Engage - the essence of the Phantom Move - you will find "The Phantom Move sounds almost too simple to work, but it is effective beyond expectations."

There are instruction camps taught by Harald Harb and his team of instructors offered at various resorts throughout the season.

Harald Harb, born in Austria, raced the World Cup circuit with the Canadian National Ski Team. He has made a lifelong study of skiing technique and is also the author of Anyone Can Be An Expert Skier 1 - The New Way To Ski (Buy Direct) and co-author of Ski Flex - Flexibility, Fitness & Conditioning for Better Skiing (Buy Direct).
