Guest Author Ray Rice

By Mike Doyle, About.com

Ray Rice started selling ski boots in Aspen, CO in November of 1989 and now, 20 years later, he still works for the same company - Surefoot - the largest seller of ski boots in the world - and is a contributing author at Ski The East.

Over the years, Ray has been the guy that moved from ski resort to ski resort, opening locations to help the company grow in size. After 5 years in Aspen, then 5 years in Whistler, BC, Ray moved to the east coast where he opened the upper-east-side store in New York City, then to Killington, VT for another store and most recently he opened the Sugarbush, VT location. He is now charged with seeing that all three eastern stores function to the same level everyday.

Ray Rice has fit and sold thousands of ski boots and Orthotics to beginners, college racers and to Olympic gold medalists and he continues to help tomorrow's next challengers. He is the bootfitter's bootfitter and offers ski boot reviews with the confidence and enthusiasm of a man who truly loves his job.

Regarding the Ski Boots Reviewed Ray says:

IThe goal is to review ski boots of many different manufacturers. I use fit criteria based on the last or shape. Narrow (95mm), Medium (102mm) and Wide (106mm), and flex terms: Stiff (160 to130), Average (120 to 90) and Soft (80 to 40). The tighter the shell is the quicker and more responsive it will be. Racers use narrow boots even on medium and wide feet and have them custom fitted to their shape. The average skier would not have comfort, warmth and performance with this precise a fit.

All manufacturers make different widths and flexes but they usually run together. The stiffest ski boots are usually the narrowest. The softest ski boots are usually the widest. Think about the type of skier you are or want to be, be honest and know that many of the boots made today are very good. The high-end female skier should be pleased with the female options but still may be looking at the men’s or top junior models for true performance.

I am being general here and specific questions may arise which need further explanation from your bootfitter. You can contact me at ray@surefoot.com.
