The company was quite succesful from the start but was always looking to make a better product and the basic oilskin outer wear evolved into the layering principle today known as the 3-Layer System™ which would be fondly welcome by mountain people.
In 1961 fiberpile, the original fleece, was developed and because of the extraordinary insulating properties plus the fact it ventilated well, 'fleece' became a staple of the outdoor workingman. 1980 brought the Helly Tech technology marrying hydrophilic and microporous technology to produce apparel was both waterproof and breathable. This meant that outdoor people could work and play without being ruled by bad weather.
Now this year, we have the Helly Hansen H2 Flow Technology which stands for "Hollow Heat Flow" and provides the wearer the ability to adjust the climate-temperature, airflow, humidity-within the jacket or pant. The U.S. Ski Team athletes will be wearing Helly Hansen base layer during more than 75 World Cup races in 12 countries over the course of each season.
For most skiers and riders I think the the first time they come across Helly Hansen on a large scale is when they ski a resort where the entire resort staff is outfitted in Helly Hansen gear and no matter what the weather you always get a smile from the lifties to the ski school director - 'trusted by professionals.'
Just like the great car makers Helly Hansen passes what's learned in the extreme down to the recreational skier and here's what Helly Hansen has to say about the the 2012-2013 collection:
"Founded in Moss, Norway, in 1877, Helly Hansen continues to protect and enable professionals making their living on oceans and mountains around the world. Their apparel, developed through a blend of Scandinavian design and insights drawn from living in some of the harshest environments on earth, helps provide the confidence professionals need to step out into the elements and complete their jobs. The company invented the first supple, waterproof fabrics more than 130 years ago, created the first fleece fabrics in the 1960s and introduced the first technical baselayers made with LIFA® Stay Dry Technology in the 1970s. Today, Helly Hansen is the official uniform partner for more than 60 ski resorts and mountain guiding operations and has outfitted more than 33,000 mountain professionals. The brand's outerwear, baselayers, sportswear and footwear for winter, outdoor and water sports are sold in more than 40 countries.
