All Mountain Performance Skis

2009-2010 All Mountain Performance Cruisers

From

All mountain performance skis are the most versatile category of skis, appealing to rising intermediates and weekend experts seeking a versatile ski for mixed, changing, conditions. Waists vary with wider waists appealing more to those who favor softer snow and narrower waists for Eastern warriors.

Dynaster Contact Cross TI (120/72/104)

These are a keeper. Smooth and strong with fabulous edge hold, the Contact Cross TI were suggested by a test partner. He was right! These are great carvers who love solid technical skiers. These would work well for lighter skiers and those who like carving turn after turn after turn. Contact the carving center.

K2 Apache Recon MX 12.0 (119/78/105)

With the Apaches always a favorite of Snow East Magazine Editor Bill Jones, the Apache Recon was like an all-season tire: It was smooth and fun in virtually every condition. Particularly forgiving, I was reminded why so many skiers love these skis: it’s fun to ski, forgiving of technical weaknesses, and simply pleasant. It’s an ideal choice for mellow skiers seeking maximum versatility.

Nordica Hot Rod Nitrous CA ($999. w Binding) 124/78/108

A particularly quick turning test ski, this ski seemed most happy when skied fast. Like a Hot Rod, it comes alive at speed, holds well, and is sufficiently wide as to demonstrate a nice mix of soft-snow and hard-snow skills. Of note, I did find the edge grip loosened on the afternoon’s hardest snows.

Rossignol Avenger 82 TI (126/82/112)

The Avenger was an especially forgiving and fun cruiser. It would seem ideal for a one-quiver performance ski mostly worked on hard-pack and groomed terrain with occasional forays onto Eastern type powder. It responded superbly and was amazing in it’s forgiveness. It would seem especially ideal for intermediates making a breakthrough as well as for experts seeking a forgiving tool. It’s a test winner.

Volkl Unlimited AC30 (124/80/107)

The AC30 has become a stale for skiers. With classic Volkl edge grip, the AC 30 is a lively and strong ski best suited for those with strong technical skills seeking a quick-responding ski. I did wonder if a careful tuning might enhance the skis forgiveness and versatility. Still, for those with solid edging this a contender great on Eastern hardpack.

Blizzard Magnum 8.1 (123/81/108)

These scored (and soared) in test conditions. A forgiving board for intermediates to experts, this defines the new Blizzard line. Great skis. Versatile. Fun!
