Lapland Lake Cross Country Ski and Vacation Center

Special Winter Programs and Activites

By Mike Doyle, About.com

Lapland Lake offers many special programs and activities.

  • Ladies Love to Ski Program - This program offers beginner and intermediate female skiers the opportunity to improve their skills. Two of Lapland Lake’s PSIA-certified female instructors will lead classes in both classic or skate ski techniques. Included in the full-day program will be instruction, lunch, a hot drink, open skiing with the instructors and fellow participants, and a group wrap-up.

  • Senior Citizens Discounts - Trail passes and season passes to skiers and snowshoers ages 60 and over are reduced all season long. Skiers over 75 ski free every non-holiday midweek day. On non-holiday Thursdays, skiers and snowshoers ages 60+ enjoy “Soup-er Seniors Day” - a free cup of hot, homemade soup at the resort’s Tuulen Tupa Grill.

  • Multiple family and children-only programs cater to the needs of both parents and children. Kids’ Club Lessons are 90 minutes of a safe and enjoyable learning experience for those in kindergarten through age 15. Lapland Lake's Lemmings Club, part of the Bill Koch Youth Program, pairs junior skiers through age 13 with parents to enjoy games and “everyone wins” racing on Saturday mornings. The Children's Equipment Exchange Program offers the opportunity to "trade-in" ski equipment as children grow. A popular season-long equipment rental program is also available. Pulk sled rentals are available for parents to safely tote young children while skiing the trails.

  • Winter Events include November’s annual Open House and December’s Annual Reindeer Roundup Pursuit Race. January’s Winter Trails Day offer free first-timer ski lessons for pre-registrants and an equipment suppliers’ Demo Day. Several inter-scholastic ski races will be scheduled throughout the season.

Non-Winter Activities

Lapland Lake offers this same setting for year round enjoyment in spring, summer and fall seasons for overnight guests. There is 70-acre, non-motor wilderness lake with a designated swimming area. Rowboats, canoes, paddleboat, dock, screen house, beach toys, swingset, and lounge chairs are provided free of charge.

Smallmouth bass, perch, pickerel, bullhead and lake trout are there for the catching. Other activities include on-site hiking (31 miles), badminton, horseshoes, croquet, wiffleball, wildlife viewing, and a self-guided 24 station nature tour. Rental equipment include mountain bikes, baby joggers, baby backpack carriers, and tot trailers.

Amenities and Ambiance

Celebrating Olavi's heritage there is a Finnish Flavor throughout the resort, enhanced with Finnish background music, menus highlighted by Finnish specialties, and Finnish trail signs and building names. There is a two-story warming lodge dubbed "the Finnish Line" which houses a 52-seat snack bar area, a comfortable warming area, the rental and retail shops, and an authentic Finnish woodburning sauna. Two domesticated reindeer, common to a Finnish landscape, are stabled at the area and seem happy to afford photo ops.

The resort's Tuulen Tupa Grill operates during the winter season, with seating for 60 people. A creative lunch menu is offered Thursday through Sunday along with Saturday evening dinner. The menu features traditional Finnish foods in addition to vegetarian specialties and American fare.

Ann has worked hard to provide an atmosphere of serenity and peacefulness in the forest, while still maintaining the spontaneity of familes enjoying each other’s company - something very hard to find in today’s busy world. The tupas have no phones, nor television, though both are available at the Finnish Line, as is wireless internet.

Olavi and Ann have truly created a "Touch of Finland in the Adirondacks" with a family orientated vacation center and world class cross country skiing.

You should go out of your way to come here to enjoy winter sports. When you do, you may very well find yourself wanting to come back even when the snow is gone. Now that's something you can't say about a lot of ski areas!
