One for the Ages

Friday July 14, 2006
Former Aussie Ski Instructor, Les Heyward, recently returned to his beloved slopes of Mount Hotham, Australia to make a few turns and reminisce. I don’t think anyone on the slopes complained that he looked a little out of balance, after all, he turned 100 last January 10th.

Les learned to ski at Mount Hotham in 1930, at the age of 24. That was when the only way to the mountain was by horse and the only way to the summit was by snowshoe, and nobody complained. Maybe the early instructors complained though, because during the 40’s Les was paid 75 cents to teach and an all inclusive, five day holiday package cost someone about $16. Of course, today Les skis with a Mount Hotham complimentary Season Gold Pass.

I forgot to mention that 75 cents was payment for the entire season! Funny, I don’t hear any instructors calling to bring back the good old days.
