The Year the Lifts Stopped
Thursday July 6, 2006
2006 will be remembered at the Sölden, Austria ski resort as the year the lifts stopped spinning year round. Sölden has boasted that it runs ski lifts 365 days a year, but authorities this year have surrendered to the effects of warm summers and suspended operations for about eight weeks.
In the past, either the Rettenbach or Tiefenbach glacier had at least one lift running to carry on the tradition. However, this summer’s Sölden schedule shows all lifts have been closed from early May through June 23. It appears that only Zermatt, Switzerland which has the largest and highest summer skiing area in Europe will remain open all summer.
