One of the most common questions asked about downhill skiing is how fast skiers go. Obviously, there's a huge discrepancy between the recreational skier and Olympian ski racers.
The average skier you see cruising down the mountain is probably going anywhere between 10 to 20 miles per hour.
Downhill racers clock out at 40-60 miles per hour, and Olympians tend to ski between 75-95 miles per hour, depending on the conditions, their equipment, and their body composition. Speed skiers go even faster.
Here's more on how fast skiers go and how you can using skiing apps to track your own speed, vertical and miles skied.

I ski with a bunch of fifty+ guys in Vermont. Got a GPS and we tend to ski 40-50mph. Our kids are in 7th grade and they tend to ski right along side, if not in front of us. We may ski faster then most but we are not the fasest on the hill. Most of your higher level intermediates will ski around 40 mph on the wide open groomed trails without much effort.
I have topped out 59 mph, at Blackjack in MI’s UP.
I was a speed skier for many years. The current speed skiing record is 156 MPH.
I’ve got a few apps on iPhone and android for ski tracking. Fastest I’ve gone is about 40, but as noted above clearly some go much faster.
