Alpine Skiing World Championships Takes Center Stage

By February 4, 2013

Follow me on:

Over the last month, we've been having some really thrilling freeskiing and freestyle competition here in the states and, all the while, the U.S. Alpine Ski Team has been far from home, but still winning medals across Europe.

Now it's time to get out the cowbells and cheer for your favorite racers as the 42nd FIS Alpine Ski World Championships opens in Schladming, Austria and runs through February 17. If you follow alpine racing you might know Schladming hosts a night slalom race where 45,000 fans squeeze up to cheer and party in the town that's home to about 4500 so imagine what the World Championship will draw!

When competition opens Tuesday with the women's super G,  the U.S. Ski Team's number one speed team in the world will send four top-15 ranked women into the starting gates, including defending silver medalist Julia Mancuso, defending four-time Audi FIS Alpine World Cup super G champion Lindsey Vonn, 10th ranked Leanne Smith and 15th ranked Laurenne Ross.

Remember, we're 8 hours earlier than Austria so race time will  be 5:00 a.m. EST. However, thanks to Universal Sports and NBC every second of competition from Schladming will be broadcast and we can still cheer.
