Whenever I'm asked about buying skis I offer my favorite mantra - Demo, Demo, Demo - and early in the season is a great time to demo whatever skis you are thinking of buying.
I say this is a good time to demo because the ski manufacturers want you to do just that, hoping their product is the one you take home after the dance. To better help you put prospective skis on the snow, resorts around the country hold Demo Days where ski manufacturers can tout their wares. Some Demo Days are big events and some are small, but all are offer a chance for you to try out what's new and see how you like skiing on them.
Personally, I read all the ski reviews. However, I'm not going to spend my money on skis that a pro skier says are great for him or her. I use the reviews as an overview and narrow my choices down to maybe two or three models checking the materials the skis are made of, for instance, I like the flex of wood core skis as opposed to a stiff metal reinforced ski.
Anyway, what it comes to is if you like the ski after you ski on it great, if not, then ski on another model you think might work for you - and forget the graphics - if the ski doesn't work for you, no matter how pretty it is find another.
Without a doubt resorts will do a lot to get the word out as to when they hold Demo Days - so check resort websites and social media for dates and details. For example, Okemo Mountain Resort, VT will host its annual Super Ski and Snowboard Demo Day with Head, Scott, Ramp, NeverSummer, Blizzard, Volkl, Faction, Kastle, Nordica, Atomic, Salomon, Bean Snowboards,Elan and more ready to set you up for a trail run.
Next week, on Saturday December 15, Canyons Resort in Utah will hold a big Demo Day with reps from Bern, Burton, Gnu, Lib Tech, Never Summer, Blizzard, K2, Klint, Nordica, Salomon, Scott, Rossignol, Volkl and others on hand.
There will be a lot more Demo Days throughout so check around the resorts but also keep an eye out for special demo opportunities from local ski shops and then Demo, Demo, Demo.
