The first stop of the Subaru Freeskiing Tour wrapped up in El Colorado, Chile over the weekend with Drew Stoeklein and Jess McMillan winning the TNF Chilean Freeskiing Championships.
Jess McMillan, of Jackson Hole, WY bested the women's fiercely competitive final run. The top five women skiers all finished the medal run within two points of each other. "The venue offered so many possibilities and after yesterday (Saturday) I knew I had a better run in me and today I was able to capitalize on my line choice," said Jess McMillan.
The men's finals started off with Japanese kamikaze Yu Sasaki setting the tone for the men by amping up the speed and taking more chances with larger airs.
The variable snow conditions claimed some of the top finishers from Saturday, including day-one leader Griffin Post, but wasn't able to tame the likes of winner Drew Stoeklein of Alta/Snowbird, UT, Mathieu Imbert of Vars, France (winner of this event's Backcountry.com Sickbird Award) and local favorite Chopo Diaz who finished first, second, and third, respectively.
Skiers from 11 countries competed in El Colorado, and the Subaru Freeskiing Tour stays in South America for the next venue this coming weekend(8/25-28) at Las Leñas, Argentina.
Now in its 13th year, the Subaru FWT is the largest and longest running competitive Big Mountain Freeskiing tour in the history of the sport. The Subaru FWT features over $100,000 in prize money with six competition stops and a Freeskiing World Tour Qualifier.
