After an uneventful - all flights on time - trip from upstate New York into Reno, NV. I arrived at the Mammoth Mountain Inn about 6 pm last night. From Reno to Mammoth was about a 3 hour drive through some awesome high plains scenery.
During most of the season, you can fly into Los Angeles and catch a quick hop out to Mammoth, but this season those flights stopped in early April. This was the first year for this connection out of LAX. In this economy, all airlines are cutting back somewhat, but maybe next year the hops will continue a little further into the spring skiing time.
The early arrival into Reno gave me the opportunity to visit the Moment Ski shop and factory not far from the Reno airport. I first noticed Moment skis last year at Kirkwood where my powder skiing instructor Jon Mullins and Freeskiing tournament champ Craig Garbiel were both ripping it up on these handmade American skis.
I picked up a pair of '09 Moment Tahoe skis to demo here and later in the week at Squaw Valley USA. After visiting the shop and meeting some of the Moment guys I'll have a lot more to say about these skis.
There is still a ton of snow here at Mammoth with a 7-12 foot base and a few more inches added just the other day. Today looks to be sunny and 50, a little breezy and gusty - but, I did say 7-12 foot base, right? Time to ski!
