The idea behind my recent family ski vacation at South Lake Tahoe was to base there during New Year's week to enjoy the celebrations and to "Ski In The New Year" at the world class resorts around Lake Tahoe. The closest out of town resort I and my daughter skied was Kirkwood Mountain Resort - a short 45 minute drive.
Be aware that 45 minutes means clear roads and no storms because Kirkwood sits in it's own micro-climate and attracts sierra snow storms like no other resort does. Last year when I headed up Highway 88 I was forced to turn around about 2 miles from Kirkwood until the road could be cleared of snow - but it was sure worth the wait.
This season's New Year's day trip was a breeze and my photo gallery shows Kirkwood in all its Bluebird splendor. The deep packed snow cover made ideal conditions for us to ski The Wall and really earn the Kirkwood signature Skull and Crossbones- "Experts Only" hoody that we both wore home.
