Christmas Night and It's Steep and Deep on The Ski Channel
Thursday December 25, 2008
Just as Steve Bellamy, Chairman and CEO of The Ski Channel, promised last month, the The Ski Channel network launched today, December 25th - and I'm sitting by the fire after a family Christmas dinner watching Warren Miller's Steep and Deep.
Maybe I'll watch Warren Miller's Thrills and Spills next. Peace On Earth and all is right with the world, tonight. The Ski Channel is on.

Anybody know what channel the ski network is on for Direct TV?
Try channel 1680 on DirecTV
Actually, Mike, Ski Channel is on DirecTV channel 1860, not 1680 …. but that is a “DirecTV on Demand” channel that requires, among other things, a broadband Internet connection. That eliminates people like me who choose to live in areas of rural beauty, where broadband isn’t available (except by satellite, which is still prohibitively expensive). I’d venture to say that many ski enthusiasts, given their appreciation of the environment and the outdoors, live in such places.
I’m very disappointed that DirecTV has chosen to make Ski Channel available selectively, rather than as part of one of their “standard” programming packages, comparable to the Tennis Channel (which I believe has the same founder, Steve Bellamy, as Ski Channel). I’ve of course expressed my disappointment to DirecTV, but I’m not so delusional as to expect any changes from that. I’m also disappointed that Ski Channel execs did not negotiate a more inclusive deal with DirecTV. Perhaps their thinking was that this is a start, with broader distribution to follow.
So, enjoy your Ski Channel by the cozy fire, Mike. I’m happy for you … but very jealous!
