Rowing to Keep Ski Muscles Fit

Wednesday July 9, 2008
How good of a workout can you really get in a boat or on a rowing machine? Exercise guru Covert Bailey is quoted as saying, "With rowing, not only do you use every damn muscle you own, you use them in a full range of motion... and it's probably the greatest fitness exercise that exists." That observation by Bailey - the "Father of Modern Fitness” - should convince you that rowing can be a great addition to your skiing fitness routine.

In a conversation with a sculling team coach, I asked about rowing on the water and rowing on a rowing machine. "Similar, yet different" was a good way to describe the comparison. I decided to test the waters, so to speak, by learning to row a single seat scull. Here is a look at the benefits of rowing.
