Whistler and Blackcomb To Go Peak To Peak

Monday April 23, 2007
Whistler Blackcomb has announced that the dream of connecting the two mountain peaks is about to become a reality. The proposed Gondola will be 2.73 miles long linking Whistler’s Roundhouse Lodge to the Rendezvous Lodge on Blackcomb Mountain. Aside from setting a new world record for length the 28 person cabins will rise 1,361' feet above Fitzsimmons Creek - setting a record for height.

If the height might bother you watch your step, literally, because 2 of cabins will have glass bottoms. Also, there are only 4 towers with a span of 1.88 miles between 2 of them! But you won’t have a lot of time to dwell on the views because the ride will only take 11 minutes and is planned to carry a maximum of 4,100 people per hour –that is 2,050 in each direction.

The lift will be a tri-cable Dopplemayr 3S model to be built and installed by Doppelmayr/Garaventa Group of Austria. In as much as both departure points are above 6,000' the new lift will afford quick access to both mountains’ alpine terrain.
