The Ski Club of Great Britain and Snow+Rock, a British ski and climbimg retailer are offering a series of avalance awareness lectures throughout England. The presentations are aimed at educating skiers and snowboarders on how to recognize danger signs and basic avalanche safety. They will also conduct a hands-on session demonstrating the use avalanche transceivers and the safety equipment that is available and how it works.
The talks are being held not because there is am impending rash of avalances expected, but, because the proliferation of the shaped ski and the inherent ease of turning on them has enboldened many new skiers to head off-piste and into avalance prone areas.
This is true not only in Europe but also in the States and Canada. Anyone who thinks they may be skiing in a possible danger zones would be well served by searching out an avalance awareness session. Check with the ski resort or local ski shops for time and places. As the Scouts say – Be Prepared.
