Resorts Fight Climate Change

Saturday August 12, 2006
The National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) recently released its sixth Sustainable Slopes Annual Report. This past season the Sustainable Slopes program focused on furthering the Keep Winter Cool campaign to fight global warming. According to the Annual Report, resorts are reducing their impacts on climate change by reducing 279,710,883 total pounds of CO2 emissions from all energy, waste, and transportation reduction measures.

The Report puts these reductions in perspective by stating that the reduction efforts of the participating resorts equals the benefit to the environment of eliminating 110,000 airline flights from New York to San Francisco!

To date, 180 resorts have endorsed the NSAA’s Environmental Charter, representing more than 75 percent of the ski resorts nationally based on skier/snowboarder visits.

It’s great to see ski resorts doing their bit for the environment. If we want to keep skiing, we need to do all we can to help combat climate change. For more information on climate change and how it will affect skiing as well as what we can do to combat it, see www.skiblacklivegreen.com
