Get Smart About Avalanches and Win a Heli-Trip

Wednesday August 9, 2006
Recco Locator Systems is an avalanche rescue system used by more than 500 rescue organizations throughout the world to help find people buried in avalanches. The system uses harmonic radar to pinpoint a victim’s location as the radar bounces back from a reflector attached to the clothes, helmets, or other gear. Recco emphasizes their system is meant to compliment a transceiver and is basically another tool of lifesaving.

Big Mountain Heliskiing, the newest tours offered by Bella Coola Heli Sports (BCHS) of British Columbia was the first heli-skiing operation in the world to use the Recco Locator System. They provide reflectors at no cost to staff and customers. BCHS and Recco are giving away a free five day heli-skiing trip for two with the White Book Challenge.

More important than the contest, is the fact that if you plan to ski in avalanche terrain you must read the short White Book. It is sponsored by Recco and prepared by Dale Atkins, Avalanche Forecaster, Colorado Avalanche Information Center, long-time US representative to the International Commission for Alpine Rescue, search, and committee chairman of the American Avalanche Association. This little PDF booklet could save your life.
