Swedish Skier Dies On Everest

Tomas Olsson, renowned Swedish ski mountaineer, died last week in a tragic fall on the north face of Mount Everest. Olsson and Norwegian Tormod Granheim were attempting to be the first to ski down the Norton Couloir. On May 16th they had reached the summit after what Olsson described in his last communication as an incredibly tough climb that took 14 hours.
Shortly after starting their descent, the pair reached a bare rock face at about 8500 meters and were forced to rappel down. During the short 50 foot roping an anchor pulled loose and Olsson fell into a long slide. Granheim climbed down after Olsson but could only find his ice axe and scattered gear. Granheim did manage the long solo descent to advanced base camp and a search for Olsson was immediately initiated. Tomas Olsson’s body was found last Saturday by a Sherpa at 6700 meters.
